Tonight (and for most of this weekend, really) it’s been and going to be the Battle of the Blowhards. Schilling vs. Clemens, Red Sox vs. Yankees. The two highest payrolls in baseball and the most storied rivalry since Hatfield and McCoys.
The Red Sox send out Curt Schilling, the Yankees send out Roger Clemens. This is a pretty fair fight, if you ask me. Curt’s had a horrendous year (a walk / contract year, I might add), but so has Clemens. And now, with his career finally starting to catch up to him (bad feet and an elbow ligament problem that will most assuredly end his career) it looks like these two former greats will be fighting for the saving of their collective grace.
I’ve been a fan of baseball for many years. I’ve watched both of these careers over the years and I watched in awe during the 2001 World Series and will think of it as one of the better ones in recent memory (the cake-topper, of course, being the now-fabled 2004). But this is 2007 and both Schil and Rocket are old. They’re tired. They’re stubborn.
I expect both of them to pitch their hearts out tonight, but I expect that to only last until the 5th inning for each.
Let the battle begin.
