Bonds is done.

You know, I’m extremely happy that Barry Bonds will be out of baseball. And while I don’t think for one minute he’ll do an ounce of time for his alleged crimes, I do think he should.

For years I’ve read all of the negative comments from teammates and fans alike and it is pretty amazing to see it still happening. Take this quote:

“It’s going to be different without him here, but it’s also going to be great to have the personalities of (Barry) Zito and (Aaron) Rowand come in and be able to take over the clubhouse,” infielder Kevin Frandsen said. “And I hope they do, and make it fun. The game we play is fun.”

How many players, managers, bat boys and other people associated with the Giants have felt this way? Probably a lot of them. Kevin Frandsen is is right. It’s time to have fun.

Good-bye, Barry.

BONDS INDICTED

There isn’t much information, but it looks like the Home Run King has hit his last home run. We’ll see what happens. More on this as it develops.

EDITED: 8:36 PM, EST

So the information is coming through now and I have to say I’m very happy about this. It’s time to clean up the game. Bring out the names, throw them on the table and let the public determine if they still want to watch.

I don’t care if the Sox have players on “the list” or not. I want to know. I would love to have my suspicions validated; I’m pretty sure they will be.

The off-season market is about to change. The owners will have more bargaining power against the players they find out are former HGH, anabolic steroid and amphetamine users. They’ll still sign them to a contract, of course, because MLB can do nothing except leak the names and the drugs. Is that bad enough? No. Not really. Those same people will “live in shame and be soooo sorry”, but they’ll still either have the previous millions or get new ones.

Mitchell’s report is coming soon, I hope, and it will definitely take my mind off the fact that there’s five more months until the regular season opener.

Mike Lowell: Historic 3rd Baseman

Mike Lowell is now in the Red Sox record books as the all-time club leader for RBIs in a season. This guy has been amazing this year and I can’t imagine how incredibly proud he must feel after slumping for a two-year period, then come back and kick collective buttocks.

Typically throughout his career, Mike Lowell has taken a sort of dive in the second half. This time, Manny got hurt, and Mike comes in to the 4 spot (thereby allowing Ortiz to keep his comfortable spot in the lineup) and driving in runs like no other third baseman in the history of the organization.

When his bloated contract came as part of the deal with Beckett, I and many other people said, “Well, at least his defense is solid.”

Notes:

  • Barry took his last hacks as a professional baseball player. I know he’s not retired, but he’s not playing this weekend and something tells me he’ll be a little busy playing a whole new type of defense next year.
  • With Lester not doing too well (how can you get 9 strikeouts and still give up 4 ER is beyond me), he probably won’t make it to the first post season roster. I seriously doubt he’ll be on the roster at all, but we’ll see.
  • Gagne really isn’t doing all that well, is he? Wow. If they “need him” so much, he better try not throwing any more fastballs.
  • The magic number is two.
  • The Yankees are officially in the post season. I can’t believe how hard they charged to get back to the playoffs.

756*

So, there it is, then. The ball that became # 756 for Barry will be placed into the Hall of Fame with an asterisk.

This is a significant milestone in baseball’s history. I’m sure if it ever comes out that he didn’t cheat (will not happen), people will be up in arms and yelling about the fact that Ecko destroyed a piece of Americana. But, he did not.

You see, I’m a big fan of popular opinion, but I’m a bigger fan of letting the people that CARE to vote, vote. I love that the people who had an opinion showed up in droves and put their mark on the world. Whether or not they did it maliciously, who can tell. I have to take it with a grain of accuracy because what else would I have? Nothing.

I think it was ridiculous for someone to pay three quarters of a million dollars to make a point, but the point is well taken.

OH! And the Sox WON and the Yanks LOST, so the Red Sox Magic Number is 3, and Manny came back and had a hit and scored a run and Youk got to play too and Ellsbury and Pedroia continue to be amazing and, and, and… whew! It was a nice night for baseball.

BECKETT - YOU ROCK.

Thank you, Josh. It’s been a hard time watching your team falter in the last couple of weeks. And, to be fair, you threw way too many pitches for six innings, but you ARE the Cy Young winner this year. No doubt about it. You just clinched it, man, as well you should.

Notatoes:

  • Varitek and Lowell had frustrating nights until they hit home runs. Nice power when we needed it!
  • Kazmir is a fantastic pitcher and if he were on a big-market team he’d be a #1 or #2. The Red Sox would love to have his services.
  • Looks as though the party is over for Barry in San Francisco. Good. Now that he’s not protected by his boss, we’ll see some action on the legal front.
  • Ellsbury was MONEY with that catch in the bullpen. Why, then, did he keep looking over at the guys in the ‘pen with that look on his face that suggested he’d be talking to them later in the clubhouse?
  • Gagne had a perfect inning! Gagne had a perfect inning!
  • Nice work by Papi coming into the game and hitting a dinger and a double. The guy was supposed to have the night off! I love the commitment.
  • They really do need Manny and Youk back in there… this is seriously frustrating.
